Beer of the month opinion

Beer of the Month: Mt. Begbie Brave Liver Scotch Ale

Sometimes we feel like we talk about Mt. Begbie a little too much, but then realize that they still aren’t well known enough, so we keep singing their praises.

Based out of Revelstoke, BC, Mt. Begbie is one of those breweries that has been producing exceptionally good beer for years, and yet somehow have stayed under the radar. Yes, they’ve won awards (plenty), and yes they have a cult following, but based on the quality of their beer they should be far more popular.

Take for example the Brave Liver. This smooth Scotch Ale is a full bodied strong ale also known as a “Wee Heavy”. Scottish Pale Ale malts are artfully crafted to impart hints of oak, scotch and caramel.

This beer goes exceptionally well with meats, particularly roasted beef, lamb or smoked salmon. You can also pair it with strong aged cheeses, toffee pudding or chocolate desserts.

Honestly, if you haven’t had the pleasure of Mt. Begbie beer, this is as good a place to start as any.

Brave Liver:

  • ABV: 6.5%
  • IBU: 22
  • Flavour: malt, caramel, oak
  • Aroma: Nutty, caramel, malt
