This weekend, celebrities will be flocking to the 91st Academy Awards to see who walks away with some little golden statues, and who has to put on their best “I’m so happy for you” face. We get to watch the entire 3 hour long escapade in the comfort of our own homes, and of course with the support of some fancy cocktails.
To get you through the evening, and to feel as posh as the celebs on screen, here’s a few cocktails you can make for your own Oscar party.
Red Carpet Rose
The nice thing about this cocktail is it makes a big batch, so you can enjoy watching the show rather than mixing up fancy cocktails all night long.
Ingredients:
- 4 sprigs of fresh mint
- 2 oz agave syrup or simple syrup
- 3 oz fresh lime juice
- 20 oz Kim Crawford Rosé
- 10 oz grapefruit flavoured soda water
Method: In a large pitcher, gently muddle mint with syrup. Top with lime juice, Rosé and soda. Mix well. Serve over ice and garnish with grapefruit slices.
Rough Cut
This cocktail from Toronto’s Thompson Hotel was inspired by A Star is Born, starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. The drink has a southern, old fashion and approachable theme.
Ingredients:
- 1.75 oz Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel
- Barspoon of Peach Gomme Syrup
- 5 Dashes of Sorghum and Sasparilla Bitters
Method: Add all ingredients into an ice filled mixing glass and stir until thoroughly chilled. Strain over a large roughcut piece of ice in an old-fashioned glass. Express oils of an orange peel over the cocktail and discard.
Airmail
This sparkling cocktail combines fresh lime juice, honey syrup and is topped with a crisp splash of prosecco for an easy sipper that can be enjoyed throughout the night.
Ingredients:
- 1.5 oz Havana Club Añejo Blanco rum
- 0.75 oz fresh lime juice
- 0.75 oz honey syrup (2:1 ratio of honey to water)
- Martini & Rossi prosecco
- Lime twist for garnish
Method: Combine and shake rum, honey syrup & lime juice in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake until chilled. Strain into a champagne glass. Top with chilled prosecco. Garnish with a lime twist.
Mercado Roma
With Roma being the leader in nominations this year (10 overall) it makes sense to have a drink in its honour. The Mercado Roma shares the same namesake, and is just as creative as the film.
Ingredients:
- 1.75 oz Patron Silver
- 1 oz Grapefruit juice
- 0.75 oz Pineapple ancho shrub*
- 1 tsp clove honey**
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
Method: Combine ingredients in a shaker tin. Add ice, shake and strain over a big rock of ice in a double rocks glass. Garnish with half-dehydrated grapefruit on top of ice and sprinkle ancho salt over it.
*Blend equal parts pineapple juice and sugar and rest for up to two hours. Add equal parts white wine and vinegar and let rest overnight. Add a tsp of chipotle sauce and blend.
**Add equal parts honey, water and a handful of cloves to a pot and heat on medium for 20 minutes, stirring constantly. Strain out cloves and store in a airtight container.
